Do I need to submit my VAT returns online?

Posted Feb 9, 2010

HMRC have asked us to remind our visitors that VAT will shortly be moving online, so paper based filing will soon become a thing of the past.

From April 2010, any limited company contractors who have an annual VAT exclusive turnover of £100,000 or more will have to submit their VAT returns online and also pay their VAT liabilities electronically.

Additionally, if you (or your accountant) registers your limited company for VAT from 1st April 2010 onwards, you'll have to file your returns online from the start, regardless of the turnover.

The form is the same as the green paper-based one most contractors will have become used to using, and the online process is secure.

HMRC point our that submitting your return online also helps reduce errors, provides automatic calculations and with an on-screen acknowledgement that it's been received you don't have to worry.

If you're using HMRC Online Services for the first time, you will have to register for an online account.
