Social networks no match for job boards for IT professionals

Posted Apr 9, 2010

A new survey suggests that, despite the media's infatuation with social networking sites, IT job seekers still overwhelmingly look for new work via job sites and recruitment agencies.

Job boards and agencies still run the show

The research, carried out by The IT Job Board last month, showed that although many IT professionals use networking sites such as LinkedIn, they do so primarily to build up a portfolio of contacts, and to keep in touch with former colleagues.

Although half of those surveyed had used LinkedIn to search for job openings, 80% have failed to secure new roles via professional networking sites. The most popular ways of finding work for IT people are still job boards (42%) and recruitment agencies (30%).

The main criticisms voiced about sites like LinkedIn are: many users don't know how to actually find jobs on the site, they don't know how to approach agencies, they don't want their current employers to know they are seeking new opportunities. In addition, a sizeable number of those surveyed claimed that such sites are not specialist enough.

Alex Farrell, MD of The IT Job Board, says that the main problem with this new generation of networking sites, is a lack of targeting for IT professionals:

CV databases still the most effective method for recruitment

"Whilst there is a role for professional networking sites in the recruitment process, it is still evolving. There is still confusion around how to use professional networks effectively to find work. They are servicing the passive market, whilst active job seekers are utilising both job boards and recruitment consultants.

"Making a success of professional networking is time intensive for both candidates and recruiters alike. These channels don't - as yet - provide targeted platforms. Today's recruiters would be better placed using pin-pointed CV databases, which provide a more targeted, effective and proactive way of finding candidates."
