IT skills kept of Government "shortages" list

Published on Sep 10, 2008

IT contractors will be pleased to hear that all IT occupations have been kept off the skills shortage list.

With input from e-skills UK, the Professional Contractors Group and the Sector Skills Council for IT and telecoms, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) decided that there was no strong evidence of a shortage of IT expertise in the UK.

You can access the MAC report here (PDF)- Page 184.

This is the key extract relating to IT skills:

"Our analysis of the top-down evidence on shortage indicators showed that information and communication technology managers passed on just 1 out of 12 shortage indicators; IT strategy and planning professionals passed on just 2 out of 12; and software professionals passed on 3 out of 12 indicators. This does not constitute strong evidence of shortage"

The PCG were instrumental in keeping IT skills off the shortage list back in 2002.

Managing Director, John Brazier, commented:

"As the economy enters choppy waters and demand for IT contractors in particular seems to be falling, it is good to see that the MAC has recognised that there is no overall IT skills shortage in the UK.

"PCG was instrumental in having all IT occupations removed from the shortage list in 2002, and we are pleased that our work on the sector skills panel and formal submission to the MAC have been taken on board."
