Self Assessment - Paper deadline moved forward to 31st Oct 2008

As the latest self-assessment season comes round again, contractors who want to submit a paper return should know that the deadline for submission has been moved forward this year to 31st October 2008.

There is a £100 penalty for late submissions of paper returns.

Presumably in an effort to encourage online filing, the online filing deadline remains 31st January 2009.

Any tax due from contractors electing to submit paper or online returns is payable by 31st January 2009, including their first "payments on account" for the next tax year.

How to file online

All you need to do is register on the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa and click 'Register for Self Assessment Online'. Your tax will be calculated automatically, you get an immediate online acknowledgement once you've filed, and it's processed faster.
