Self assessment deadlines for IT contractors

If you plan to send HMRC a paper tax return this year, once again the deadline is 31st October. However, you have until 31st January to submit online, with the added comfort of knowing your return won't be delayed by any disruptions to the postal service.

Many contractor accountants will prepare and submit your return on your behalf for an extra fee of between £100 and £200 typically, although the process is fairly streamlined if you prefer to submit personally.

To prepare and submit your Tax Return online you need to register for an online account. HMRC will then send you an activation code within 7 days so you can activate your account. Your tax liability will be calculated for you, and the chances of discrepancies are therefore lower than using the paper return.
