Time running out to register for self assessment online

Posted Jan 17, 2012

HMRC has reminded taxpayers new to self assessment that they only have a few days left to register for online submission.

If you are completing your return on your own, rather than via your accountant, you will need to register for an activation code before you can start completing your tax return for 2010/11.

So you don't get caught out, you should ensure that you register to use the service by Saturday 21st January to allow time for the code to be mailed to your address.

HMRC will apply a £100 penalty right away if you fail to meet the 31st January deadline for completion of your online return. This is also the deadline for paying any tax you owe.

For the first time, in 2012, this penalty will even apply if you file your return late, despite having no tax to pay. Further penalties are levied at 3, 6 and 12 months if you have still failed to submit your return.

The registration process is fairly simple - go to www.hmrc.gov.uk/online to get started, or call 0845 9000 444.
