RBS to slash further 1000 IT jobs

Posted Sep 5, 2010

RBS is to cut a further 1000 IT jobs, taking the total number of job losses at the bank to over 21,000 since 2009.

The latest 3,500 job cuts are spread across business services operations (mainly call centres) and the technology divisions.

Unsurprisingly, the Unite union called the news a "horror story", especially as many of roles are to be relocated overseas.

RBS plans to create 500 new technology roles in its overseas operations - in the US, India and the Far East.

RBS was forced to sell 318 branches following a 2009 European Commission directive, which it says accounts for many of the most recent job cuts - along with the need to recapitalise following the credit crisis.

Although none of the recent job cuts are thought to affect the bank's IT contractor workforce, the sheer volume of "personnel downsizing" at RBS would suggest that job security across the firm is at a premium.
