Survey launched to find out more about the UK's contractor workforce

Posted Jan 21, 2009

The PCG, which represents the UK's IT contractors and freelancers has launched a major new survey to find out more about the nature of the UK's freelance workforce.

The Professional Contractors Group survey asks questions about the operation of freelancing in practice. It covers topics such as how freelancers find work, what problems they encounter in the marketplace, how many clients they have, and how they would ideally like to work. It also asks whether they feel they get a fair deal from the legal and regulatory framework in the UK.

The survey is open to both PCG members and non-members. If you are not currently a member of the Group, simply click here to take part.

The PCG's MD, John Brazier, commented:

"We know there are an estimated 1.4 million freelancers in the UK, and that this dynamic workforce is vital to our economy in these difficult times.

"We are committed to finding out more about this important body of workers, and this survey will help us do that.

"We hope this survey will shed further light on how freelancing works in the UK, and look forward to publishing the results in the Spring."

Earlier Freelancer Study

Back in September last year, the PCG released findings from another piece of freelancer research. The study, carried out by the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University, revealed that:

- There are 1.4m freelancers in the UK

- 62% of freelancers are male

- Number of freelancers is up 14% on a decade ago
