What is a PAYE umbrella company?

Posted Jan 24, 2011

Most contractors either work via their own limited companies, or via a PAYE umbrella company.

Unlike the limited company contractor option where you will become the director (and employee) or your own company, with a PAYE umbrella you become an employee of the umbrella company.

Each week or month, on receipt of your timesheet, the umbrella company will invoice the client on your behalf. You will then be paid a salary (minus Pay As You Earn income tax, and national insurance contributions). Your umbrella fee will also be deducted before you are paid.

During your contracts, you will also be able to reclaim expenses from the umbrella company, however you can only claim for expenses which have been genuinely incurred during the course of the contract (see our guide to expenses dispensations for more information).

As you might imagine, we have a wealth of resources to help you choose the best umbrella company for your needs. You should spend time researching the umbrella company market before signing up.
