Do female contractors get paid less than their male counterparts?

Posted Feb 22, 2011

The first edition of the Parasol Insight Index suggests that a contract rate gender gap exists within the contracting industry as it does elsewhere in the economy.

The umbrella services provider analysed the details of almost 9,000 contractors as part of a new bi-annual study into the state of the umbrella contractor market.

The average hourly rate for male contractors is £34.41, compared to just £32.91 for females. Based on a 37.5 hour week and 47 week working year, this equates to a pay gap of £2,643.

The new index also revealed that the highest paid sectors were finance (average rate of £53.74), and the oil industry (£53.66).

Unsurprisingly, the highest earning contractors are in Greater London (£36.16 per hour), the South East (£36.64) and South West (£36.17).

Commenting on the figures, Rob Crossland, Chief Executive at Parasol, said:

"The findings clearly show that a gender gap exists in the contracting market which is a surprise. The reasons that the gap exists at a national level are the subject of much debate, with various parties citing aspects such as women taking a break from employment to have a family, etc. However I don't believe this stands up when it comes to contracting. When an end-user employs a contractor it is based on them having the required skill set in order to satisfy the end users requirements. Surely it is the skill set and the market for this skill set that should set the rate, and contractor's gender should not have an impact?"
