Leading outsourcing site reports rapid growth in demand for IT freelancers

Posted Jan 13, 2012

Statistics released by the world's leading outsourcing site, show that the demand for IT freelancers is growing strongly.

Rapid growth in outsourcing via the web

Freelancer.com has released its latest quarterly summary of the Top 50 skills most sought after by clients, this time from the final quarter of 2011.

The quarterly Top 50 list also provides a useful insight into current technology trends, and the market share of different applications and products.

The site is one of several leading outsourcing and 'crowdsourcing' sites which match freelancers to clients from all over the world. In fact, over 130,000 different projects were posted on Freelancer.com over the final three months of 2011.

Although 'contractors' are quite different from 'freelancers', in that contractors typically work for a single client, there are some interesting general trends contained in the report.

Key Trends for Q4 2011

The latest statistics show that there is an ever-growing appetite for digital skills, particularly related to app design and social media integration.

The demand for freelancers with skills in mobile technology has grown particularly fast over the past three months, with Android jobs up 33%, iPhone and iPad roles up 18% and 22% respectively.

Only trivial numbers of Symbian, Windows and Nokia jobs were advertised on the site.

The demand for more general programming skills also rose rapidly during the final quarter of 2011, with C++ jobs up 38%, Java up 36%, C up 27%, .NET up 27%, and C# up 20%.

Interestingly, the actual number of programming jobs in these skill areas was insignificant compared to the number of PHP projects posted - at over 28,000 in total, up 13%.

HTML5 is growing rapidly, rising 41% during the period, far faster than the rate of increase in demand for freelancers with Flash skills. In fact, Freelancer.com expects HTML5 to overtake Flash by the middle of 2012.

Other significant risers in the Fast 50 include Facebook, and other general social networking skills. Other areas which are likely to feature in future top skills list include Google+ (which claims to already have 62m users) and Cloud Computing.
