The article highlights dozens of useful online resources for freelancers (and contractors of course), with a strong emphasis on billing and invoicing tools.

Coupled with the massive growth in online filing (for tax and administration purposes), there's every chance that you could contract for a year without actually needing to retain a single bit of paper (aside from 'reminder' forms from HMRC perhaps)!

Blinksale - online invoicing tool. You can set up recurring invoices, send invoices by email (including in PDF format).

FreeAgentCentral - online invoicing, keep a track of your expenses, even works out your accounts.

Klok - allows you to easily keep track of your time spent on multiple projects.

Elance - one of the leading freelance project boards, predominantly IT-focused. Not so easy to compete with third world programmers though.
