mCommerce IT contractors command high rates
Posted Dec 20, 2011
A new report shows that contractors working in mobile commerce roles, building tools for smartphones and tablet computers, are likely to be paid at least 20% more than contractors in more general e-commerce positions.
The rapid rise in demand for mCommerce contractors
The report by ReThink Recruitment, follows on from the latest JM Digital survey, which also showed that the demand for digital contractors remains very high.
According to the ReThink statistics, junior mobile commerce (mCommerce) designers earn on average £350/day, compared to £280 for a designer on a traditional e-commerce project.
Programme managers on mCommerce projects are better off still, commanding average rates of £600, £100 per day more than colleagues on e-commerce protects.
The JM Digital survey results back up these latest findings, and said the skills in greatest demand right now include user experience architects, information architects, visual designers, and a multitude of developer roles (Android, Silverlight, IOS, Blackberry and Flex).
High demand for mCommerce in the retail sector
There is a high demand for digital contractors, particularly in the banking and retail sectors, as companies compete to provide the best 'user experience' on mobile platforms.
Director at ReThink, Iain Blair, said that many retailers see mCommerce as an "exciting sales avenue":
"This is now a top priority for all the major retailers. Most see it as far more critical than more traditional areas of spend, such as investment in store payment systems or upgrading store fittings.
"Some retailers feel that they missed out on the initial e-commerce land grab and that they are not going to make the same mistake with mCommerce."
Unsurprisingly, now is a very good time for contractors who have mCommerce experience, continues Blair:
"Competition among retailers to attract suitably qualified staff is intensifying and we are now seeing a two tier market with pay for staff with mCommerce experience motoring ahead.
"This time last year much of this work was being outsourced to third party agencies. Now retailers feel far more comfortable bringing this work in house. They are recruiting to build up their own teams and are willing to pay a premium to secure the best staff."
