US IT contractor faces 10 stretch for malware bomb plot

Following his indictment last year, a US IT contractor has been found guilty of planting a malware bomb on a mortgage company's server and could face up to 10 years in prison.
Early last year, we reported the case of Unix contractor Rajendrasinh Babubhai Makwana, who was fired by Fannie Mae for making a coding error.
However, despite handing all equipment back to the company when he was fired, the contractor's server access rights were not fully revoked until later that evening.
It is believed that Malwana planted the malicious code within this short window of opportunity. If it had succeeded, the bomb could have caused millions of pounds worth of damage.
Anyone attempting to log in to the network following the malware attack would have been presented with the message "Server Graveyard" if the plan had succeeded.
It could have taken a week to restore the data, according to experts at the mortgage firm.
The 36 year old contractor, an Indian national working for outsourcing firm OmniTech, worked at Fannie Mae's Urbana, Maryland facility from 2006 to October 24, 2008.
As a Unix specialist, he would have had access to all 5,000 of the company's servers.
Malwana will be sentenced on 8th December, and faces a possible 10 year prison stretch.
