Does my contractor limited company name matter?

Posted Dec 14, 2010

The simple answer to this question is - yes, it does.

Aside from the limitations Companies House places on your choice of company name, you should think carefully before opting to name your new company something 'amusing' or clever.

Limited company naming tips for contractors

1. Ideally, you should choose a professional sounding limited company name. It doesn't have to be corporate, but it will be used on contracts you sign, invoices, and other paperwork.

2. The name you choose must not already be in use, it mustn't be offensive, or contain any 'sensitive' words or expressions.

3. If you plan to use your company for non-contracting activities, you might be better off opting for a generic limited company name to start with, rather than something technical.

4. We've often suggested that readers search the Companies House register of current names alongside a search for available domain names. It is always best to make sure your company domain is available (preferably in both .co.uk and .com) before applying for the company name.

5. Should you decide at a later date that your chosen name is no longer suitable, you can change it by submitting Form NM01 to Companies House, along with a written resolution of members and a small filing fee.
