Child data fiasco joins list of worst IT disasters of all time

Following the Government's child benefit data fiasco, tech site ZDNet has published an amusing article which highlights the "Top 10 IT Disasters of all time".

The Child benefit data loss was due, you'd imagine, to carelessness rather than anything strictly technical in nature. However, the public view of data protection and security has been badly affected by recent events.

Other examples where dodgy hardware or software has damaged reputations include:

EDS and the CSA (2004) - EDS's computer systems overpaid 1.9m people and underpaid 900,000.

Millennium Bug (1999) - The doomsters ensured that big organisations spent millions upgrading computer systems to avoid some kind of disaster when midnight arrived. According to ZDNet, the total cost of fixing the bug is estimated at £400 billion!
