IT contractor indicted for planting malware bomb
Posted Feb 6, 2009
An IT contractor, sacked by US mortgage company, Fannie Mae, has been indicted for trying to destroy the company's entire PC network and the data stored within it.
The contractor, Rajendrasinh Babubhai Makwana, was fired from the mortgage company for making a coding error. Despite handing his equipment back when he was fired, his server access rights were not revoked until later that evening.
In the meantime, Makwana took the opportunity to plant a malicious script within the company's data centre.
Malwana, an Indian national working for outsourcing firm OmniTech, worked at Fannie Mae's Urbana, Maryland facility from 2006 to October 24, 2008.
A Unix engineer, he had access to all of the company's 4,000 computer servers,
The 'malware' was intended to ignite at 9am on the Saturday before last, and would have caused millions of pounds worth of damage had it not been discovered by another Unix engineer a few days after it was planted.
