Surge in number of IT contractors 'lying' on CVs
Posted Oct 19, 2009
The number of people lying on their CVs has hit a three year high of 19%, according to results of a pre-employment screening survey - with a massive increase in the number of IT contractors providing false information.
The results of the annual employment survey of 4,735 job seekers, run by Powerchex, shows that not only are recruitment agencies being inundated with more CVs than ever, but the lack of suitable roles and competition for jobs has led to more candidates falsifying information during the application process.
According to the survey which was compiled earlier this year, there has been a 50% rise in the last year of job applicants attempting to hide information about County Court Judgements (CCJs) and bankruptcies.
The most common 'embellishment' uncovered by the survey was the alteration of employment or contract dates - either to pretend that assignments were longer than they really were, or to hide periods when the applicant was 'on the bench'.
According to the report, the IT industry is one of the worst affected by the rise in dodgy CVs, with a near three fold rise in the number of lying applicants over the past three years - from 6% to 17% of all job seekers.
The survey highlighted a shocking 55% increase in discrepancies on the CVs of IT contractors working in the financial services - from 11% in 2008 to 17% in 2009, prompting the survey's authors to make the following comment:
"Companies should be wary of threats to their own customers by rogue employees at their third party IT suppliers, who often have access to a company's sensitive information. They must guard against this risk through rigorous supplier due diligence checks."
Unsurprisingly, there is a correlation between the standard of education attained by the applicant, and the likelihood that false information has been included in a CV - candidates from the ten best universities were half as likely to lie on their CVs as candidates outside the top 100.
