Clients urged to take more care preparing specs, as most IT projects deemed 'unsuccessful'
Posted Jan 18, 2012
A software firm has urged the UK's businesses to take more care when providing specs for IT work, to avoid going over budget, or even having to shelve projects entirely.
Most IT projects fail
All contractors will be aware of the situation; the client provides a project brief, with costings and time projections (all beautifully presented by the project manager, but with little contingency planning in place!)
Almost without exception, the brief is unlikely to be detailed enough, and changes become inevitable as the project progresses - causing time and budget overruns.
MSM Software polled over 200 IT professionals working on IT integration projects, and found that over two thirds had worked on IT projects which had failed because the original briefs had changed after the projects had commenced.
Given the budgetary constraints which have been forced on most IT departments over the past three years, it is more important than ever for suppliers and businesses to spend more time in the discovery stage of projects, if they are to avoid costly mistakes.
Interestingly, research from the British Computer Society (BCS) shows that a mere one in eight IT projects carried out in the EU between 1998 and 2005 were considered 'successful', while the remainder were either cancelled or incurred significant extra costs.
Collaboration needed to ensure project success
Commenting on the poll findings, Thomas Coles, MD of the software firm, said:
"Software projects are resource intensive and complex, and have a reputation for being both expensive and risky. This reputation is all too often validated by an abundance of projects failing. Yet, the failure of an IT project due to a changing brief is completely avoidable.
"In my view, the success rate of IT projects would be significantly increased if businesses and suppliers worked more closely, and transparently, at the discovery phase of a project. By doing this, long-term business processes can be established and technology designed specifically to support the individual business requirements. Collaborative working in this way is fundamental as the success or failure of a software project can also determine the future (or failure) of a business."
