Contractors motivated by more than just money when seeking new opportunities

Posted Jul 5, 2011

A survey conducted by an IT job site shows that many permanent and contract IT workers view fighting boredom in the workplace as an important factor when looking for new roles.

The IT Job Board's Job Market Survey has revealed some interesting trends in the IT job hunting process; 42% of permanent IT professionals are actively seeking work, and 52% are 'keeping an eye' on the jobs market.

Alexandra Farrell, MD, was surprised that majority of permanent IT workers surveyed were considering moving roles:

"You would expect to see movement within the contractor space, but I was alarmed to see such high numbers of permanent staff thinking about a near future career move. Losing such highly qualified payroll staff could have a serious impact on companies' IT departments."

By the end of September 2011, 35% of permies expect to have moved jobs, and 57% of contractors expect to have found new contract opportunities.

Little change in contract rates during 2011

According to the research, 58% of contractors haven't seen any change in their contract rates over the past year, 5% have absorbed a rate cut, and 46% don't expect to receive a rise when they move to their next contract position.

For IT professionals, 61% expect no increase, or just a 1-2% pay rise at their next review - a reflection of the 'climate of austerity' which has swept across the UK in recent months.

Money not the only motivating factor

Although the potential to earn more is a major benefit, 31% of contractors polled said that location was an important factor when choosing a new role. 29% of contractors said that interest in the work, and trying new challenges where also important.

Clearly, the short-term nature of the industry means that many contractors cannot afford to be as 'choosy' with new opportunities as their permanent counterparts.

IT professionals need to be motivated

Alexandra Farrell also warned business managers to make more of an effort to retain key IT staff, who may be demotivated by recent cuts to average salary levels:

"The skills that highly-qualified IT specialists bring to a business are valuable, and should not be underestimated. Companies need to re-engage with their staff, and listen to what they want. It seems that problems won't be rectified with a simple pay rise, or bonus. Bosses should address the factors which motivate their staff, and those which keep them enthusiastic in their work."
