Fewer HMRC IR35 status enquiries, but tax yield per case soars

HMRC has released further data showing that the number of IR35 status enquiries has dropped dramatically since the early 2000's, but the tax raised per enquiry in more recent years has increased greatly.
Following on from HMRC data released in September, which showed that the number of status enquiries fell to just 12 in the 2009/10 tax year, the new data shows that the number of HMRC enquiries reached a peak of 1166 in the year ending April 2004.
It would appear that status enquiries have become far more targeted in recent years; the tax raised in 2006/7 (£1,906,619) was similar to levels raised in 2003/4 (£1,973,851), but the earlier figure was yielded from over seven times as many enquiries (158 in 2006/7 enquiries vs. 1166 in 2003/4).
The total tax raised in each year doesn't necessarily correspond to the number of enquiries in each period, however the data clearly shows that the tax yield per enquiry has increased massively in recent years.
