Paying your self assessment online? Make sure you use the right account details for HMRC
Posted Jan 25, 2010
HMRC have asked self assessment taxpayers to ensure that they pay their liabilities into the correct bank account, or face having their payments returned.
During 2009, HMRC moved its bank accounts from Bank of England to Citi and RBS, which means all the account numbers and sort codes used to pay HMRC in the past have changed.
If you use online banking and are tempted to use old/stored details to pay your self assessment liabilities, HMRC say that payments may be returned, which could in turn result in late payment penalties, interest and surcharges.
If any contractors are paying HMRC via the direct debit scheme, no action needs to be taken.
To check the new account details if using BACS, internet/telephone banking, or CHAPS, read this guide for more information.
