Rising demand for freelancers in post-recession economy

A new trend survey of 1000 small business owners has revealed the extent to which on-demand resourcing and skills supplied by freelancers are helping the UK's estimated 4.8 million SMEs recover from the recession.
The report, published by Office Cavalry, shows that whilst the recession and recent VAT increase may have dampened spirits, 95% of SMEs are ambitious to expand in 2011 and 20% predict growth.
Increased sales and new routes to market have led to a greater demand for freelancers to meet potential shortfalls of skilled individuals; 25% of SMEs intend to expand their workforce in 2011 and, of these, 38% intend to use Freelancers, whilst 55% of them said that freelancers were key to their company's stability and growth and gave them the flexibility required to meet unpredictable organisational demands.
An increasing trend among SMEs to use freelancers to meet short term staffing needs is set to continue into the foreseeable future according to the survey.
Of SMEs surveyed about the current economic climate, 93% considered freelancing as the real alternative to employing permanent staff with 52% claiming freelancers would make a significant contribution to their workforce over the next five years.
The company asserts that this suggests a significant change has taken place to the structure of the UK labour market as we know it; one that is more flexible, agile and responsive to business change and opportunity.
