Freelancing a good way to ease credit crunch costs

Published on Jul 1, 2008

The number of people seeking freelance work is increasing as the cost of living forces individuals across the country to find ways to supplement their income.

That's according to PeoplePerHour.com, the online marketplace for freelance services. The site has reported rapidly rising registrations from people who are in full-time employment but need to generate extra cash by offering freelance services in their spare time.

35% of the freelance site's users already have permanent jobs, but many are seeking an supplementary income from a wide range of skills such as graphic design, programming and online marketing. A few hour's extra work a month can yield several hundred pounds - enough to cover the soaring cost of fuel, food and utility bills

"The current economic conditions have contributed immeasurably to the burgeoning popularity of sites like ours," says PeoplePerHour.com founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou. "On regular salaries skilled professionals are struggling to make ends meet. It's little wonder increasing numbers of them are harnessing their experience and skills to offer freelance services outside office hours."
