Demand for IT skills set to grow strongly, older workers in demand
Posted Jan 25, 2011
New research from e-skills shows that the demand for IT skills is set to grow strongly over the next 5 years, with the industry increasingly favouring more seasoned IT workers over the under 30's.
The e-skills UK study shows that employment within IT and Telecoms is set to grow at over five times the average over the next ten years.
1.5m people are now employed in the IT workforce - 40% directly within the IT and Telecoms sectors, and the rest within other sectors of the economy. This year, another 100,000 new entrants will be needed by the rapidly growing industry.
Reassuringly, over the past ten years, the number of IT pros under 30 has decreased from 33% back in 2001 to just 19% last year, whilst the number over 50 has nearly doubled to 17%. Just 18% of the IT workforce in 2010 was made up of women.
IT itself could have a major part to play in the long-awaited economic recovery. According the the e-skills report, the industry contributes £81bn to the economy (9% of gross value added).
By exploiting the full potential of technology, the rest of the economy could be boosted to the tune of an extra £50bn over the next 5 to 7 years.
