Contract jobs market still growing, but at a slower pace

Posted Feb 21, 2011

The latest CWJobs / JobsAdsWatch survey of the IT employment market shows that while the demand for permanent IT staff continues to grow strongly, the contract job market is growing at a much slower pace.

The number of permanent IT jobs advertised grew by 4.6% between the third and final quarters of 2010. Over the same period, the number of IT contract positions available grew by 0.9%.

Contract rates continued to improve throughout 2010, with median rates up 5% compared to the same period 12 months ago.

The regional findings of the report show that a massive 81.3% of all contract vacancies advertised are in the South, although the growth in vacancy numbers was the lowest in the South (0.9% rise) and highest in Scotland (6.4% quarterly rise).

Software houses and financial services companies make up the majority of demand for contract workers (46% and 34.8% respectively), with demand for financial services contractors down in the final quarter of the year. This trend has reported elsewhere, with the latest Powerchex report showing a massive drop in demand for financial service contractors during January 2011.
