Are there any decent iPhone apps for contractors and freelancers?
Posted Jun 10, 2011
Given the massive consumer appetite for iPhone apps, it will come as no surprise to see some familiar contracting industry names joining in the revolution with their own mobile offerings.
Although the functionality of some niche apps is limited in scope, the potential (particularly for accountancy and umbrella firms) to provide clients with online access to their accounts is enormous. This list is likely to expand rapidly over the next few years.
We have included some of the contracting industry's iPhone pioneers below. To access any of these apps, simply search via your handset, or online using iTunes.
A selection of iPhone apps for contractors
- Jobserve Connect and Jobsite Jobs allow you to search for contract roles, store favourite jobs, and email job specs to your inbox.
- Contractors' favourite, The Register, has recently launched its own app featuring regularly updated news and comment.
- Industry news site, ContractorCalculator, provides users with the latest contractor news, guides and blogs.
- The Computer Weekly app provides the latest IT industry news, jobs and blog updates.
- Keep your profile up-to-date, and make new contacts via the LinkedIn app, an increasingly useful tool for finding contract work.
- iFreelancer aggregates freelance projects from a variety of sources including Elance, Odesk and Freelancer.com
- "Contractor Expenses" simplifies tracking and submission of expense and mileage claims together with providing the latest contracting news
- A handy late payment calculator app is available from CreditSafe, just in case you come across an unreliable or unpleasant client or agent!
- "mobileAgent", from the impressive FreeAgent software team allows you to record expenses, mileage records, enter timesheets, and even take photo records of receipts.
- SJD Accountancy's calculator app shows you how much tax you'll pay as a limited company contractor.
- JMK Group UK's "iContractor" helps contractors calculate their income and manage shifts, and includes a PAYE calculator which shows the tax difference based on your choice of business structure, and IR35 status.
- The oDesk app allows freelancers and employers to communicate, fill in work diaries, and keep a record of time worked on projects.
- You can obviously update your Facebook and Twitter (and other social networking) accounts via iPhone apps, but the user experience is rarely as good as doing so via a PC or Mac.
