Contract engineers could hold key to post-recession growth

Engineering businesses are being urged to take on more contract engineers as they seek to rebuild following the recession.
The PCG estimates that there are around 55,000 contract and freelance engineers in the country. As part of its 'Brain Gain' initiative, the organisation is keen to spotlight the large talent pool of engineers which make up a fair number of the UK's 1.4 million freelance workers.
The freelancer group has published a new guide on how businesses and freelancers can work together - containing information on important points such as how to engage the right freelancer for the job, how to draw up contracts, and how to create a good relationship between the business and the freelancer workforce. Russell Watkins, an industrial engineer who has been contracting for the past three years, said:
"Confidence in the industry is slowly returning and those firms which had to make cutbacks to survive are now lacking the vital skills and resources they were forced to let go. Now they are calling on freelancers to fill that gap and it is important that the process and communication is right for the projects we are briefed to undertake."
The PCG's MD, John Brazier, believes that businesses will increasingly turn to contract engineers in the future:
"The UK boasts many talented engineers who are offering flexibility to companies; helping them manage risk and unlock innovation and talent within their business. I believe that trend is set to grow as Britain will increasingly rely on freelance engineers to get the job done."
