Number of IT contract vacancies up by 5%

The number of contract openings advertised over the past quarter is up almost 5%, with the demand for contractors outpacing the demand for permanent staff.
Demand for contractors up 4.7%
The latest jobsadswatch.co.uk survey of IT job postings across the UK during the third quarter of 2011, shows that the number of contract vacancies rose by 4.7%, while the demand for permanent roles rose a mere 1%.
The IT industry has shown remarkable resilience to the ongoing economic crisis, with the number of IT roles advertised growing during each of the last 9 quarters.
Over the past year, the skills that have seen the most growth in demand are Agile (up 38.6%), .NET (23.4%) and ASP (22.9%).
Strongest growth in South
The vast majority of all IT contract roles are based in the South of the country, with the strongest growth during the last quarter seen in Outer London (up 5.7%), Southern England (4.8%) and Inner London (3.8%).
The number of contract roles actually contracted in the North West and North East during the last quarter, by 0.9% and 2.9% respectively.
Industry trends
The number of public sector contract roles has fallen dramatically following Government cuts - by 40.6% (permanent) and 42.2% (contract). The biggest growth in demand for contractors over the past twelve months has been from retail, software houses and consultancies.
Outlook
Given that contractors are usually the first to lose their jobs when things go bad, and the first to be recruited when the economy recovers, this latest data is an encouraging sign for the industry, although the economic outlook is far from certain.
