Smart technology could signal the end for traditional contractor CVs

Posted Mar 3, 2011

A leading job board has revealed the main CV mistakes made by IT professionals, and suggests that augmented reality (AR) CVs may help contractors show off their skills more favourably when applying for new roles.

People in the IT industry are not that good at selling themselves on paper, according to research from CWJobs this week. In fact, 74% of IT professionals think that they give a better impression of themselves in person than on their CVs.

This tallies with the views of recruiters - 88% often see mistakes on IT worker's CVs. The most oft-cited mistakes include: spelling and grammatical errors (70%), and no clear demonstration of technical ability (64%). Many CVs are either too lengthy, rambling, or contain too much irrelevant information. For IT contractors, recruiters want to see the relevant skills and experience immediately, not buried in the middle of a five page document.

One innovative solution to the problem of paper documents may come in the form of augmented reality CVs, which bring the skills and experience of jobseekers 'to life' using virtual computer-generated 3D imagery. You can see the first augmented reality CV in action here.
