Parliamentary group to investiate why freelancers are under-appreciated

The first All Parliamentary Group (APPG) roundtable was held at the House of Commons earlier this month, with MPs discussing how the Government can help to boost the economy by better utilising flexible working.
The inaugural meeting, chaired by Brian Binley MP, has been supported by the PCG. The contractor organisation's MD, John Brazier, commented:
"There are at least 1.4 million freelancers in the UK today across all industries from construction to media. We believe this figure is increasing and is adding value to the economy in a time of slow growth. Now is the time to come together and work with Brian and the APPG to highlight these issues. This event will allow the APPG to produce a report to raise awareness of freelancing in Government and amongst policymakers."
Mr Binley, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, said that "freelancing is the very foundation of the British wealth creating sector", and gave an undertaking that the APPG would make sure that the many 'myths and challenges' surrounding freelancing and contracting would be 'challenged' over the coming months.
Also sitting at the top table were Professor Andrew Burke, from the Cranfield School of Management, David Jackson, MD, Hudson Contract Services Ltd, Professor Patricia Leighton and Kevin Green, CEO of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. Jim Dowd MP, the APPG's treasurer and vice chair Stephen Hammond MP also attended.
Interestingly, Professor Burke - the founding Director of the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurial Performance and Economics - said that a lack of research to validate the economic status of freelancers had contributed to a lack of appreciation of their contribution to the economy.
This is something the Group aims to tackle over the coming months.
